Tofino, British Columbia

Meet the Schurmans from Ontario. Tim, Patty and son Jacob travelled across Canada by air to discover Tofino over four nights/five days. That’s a long way for four nights plus four days travel - their motivations… inspiring.

I am endorphin-full and happy post my first 60 km cycle and all my stuff is drenched from a night at Green Point Campground in the Pacific Rim National Park. I met the Schurman’s at the Tin Wis Best Western Resort just north of Chesterman in Tofino. I arrived to dry my camping gear, unpack to repack and was unloading my car when we first said hey.

On day two, I had just had breakfast and was getting ready to ride on the beach when Patty came out and invited me to join them for breakfast. I declined as I had just ate and then we discovered we were both Patti(y)s. I cycled our beachfront and then I went to the restaurant to share a coffee and the location of the giant starfish at low tide.

Me: If you don’t mind me asking, why did you choose Tofino or BC or Canada for your holiday?

Schurmans: We love Canada and are proud Canadians. Our son is growing up quickly and there mayn’t be many future holidays together as a family. We have seen explored Ontario extensively and been to the east coast but never the west.

Patty is an explorer/adventurer at home and wanted to see if there were opportunities in Tofino – surfing, hiking, paddling and more. Tim has worked for the government for a long time and had holidays available that influenced their schedule and timing.

The Schurman’s chose Canada. They have a special connection to Canada and wanted to invest here after pandemic and before their only son starts his own path and life commitments and adventures. I have since heard from them after they returned home and they found the starfish.
