Canadians Choosing Canada - JE 7
Newlyweds to Newfoundland
Meet Chelsea and Judson Reeves, newlyweds from interior Nova Scotia who are heading in the same direction, excited for a giant boat ride, a new province and a new life together.
It’s funny how you can grow up in a region or province and not experience significant adventures in the place. I grew up on Nova Scotia. No I did not fish. No I did not have a boat. Again, funny how we assume the character of the place in the person. Oh Saskatchewan! Are you a farmer? Oh British Columbia! You must live in Vancouver? I go on…
So Newfoundland for an east-coaster is not a given. It’s a 16-hour ferry ride from North Syndey, NS to Argentia, NFLD and from Port-Aux-Basques to NS, it’s 6 hours. I have been to NFLD only once before but never by ferry.
You have arrive to the ferry terminal quite early as this main transportation service hosts locals, visitors and supplies, all moving onto one small’ish boat. At the terminal parking lot, a couple is parking their car and I think, ‘Man she looks familiar’?! Later on the boat, as I am looking for the best seat to watch the sunset, we meet on the deck. She remarks that I looked familiar too. Serendipitous maybe?
Me: Are yuz’ from Newfoundland? (haha trying to capture my east coast accent).
Chelsea: We are actually from Nova Scotia and are going to the Island for the first time – it’s our honeymoon!
Me: Oh I love love! Congratulations! Why Newfoundland?
Chelsea: It’s somewhere where we have grown up near but have never visited, We are excited to have some new experiences before we get back to our new married life. We’ll get Screeched-in, see the ocean and hopefully try some new seafood.
For the same reason that I had never ventured by ferry, other Canadians - even those close by - wish to see places in our country for their first time – off their beaten path.
Chelsea and Judson have just started their life together as newlyweds and will return to Nova Scotia with this adventure off their bucket list and will be able to share tales of the Rock, inspiring others someday to choose Canada too.
