Trail Inspired - Weather Permitting
Fernie, BC and Waterton Lakes National Park, AB
I am inspired. It’s the land and change in geography that I knew would happen but holy ‘take my breath away’.
I could live in Fernie, BC: trails everywhere, several ways to be a part of community, great food and shops - just lovely. Maybe out of my price range but a girl can dream.
My friend Janice T (local rider and ON import) took me to a TransCanada Trail route - Mayook Trail - that was my first dirt trail ride and the perfect speed with 17 km with half climb and half down hill flowy/cruisy - and that’s why we ride! So fun! I would have done so much more but being a lone rider with lots of bear sightings, never mind multiple days of rain - I didn’t venture too far into the hills.
Today, I climbed the CrowsNest Pass - like the gateway from southern BC into the Prairies - the change in landscape makes the mind consider how glaciers and other natural disasters designed this land. Epic weather systems made for incredible skies of dark brooding clouds and rain with distant horizons beaming with sunshine. Again, I have realized that these constantly changing geographies will be common place and how fortunate I am to bear witness. GRATEFUL
Waterton Lakes National Park is simply spectacular. New asphalt, small town charm in a National Park, surrounded by mountains and a few shops and lodges, dozens of signed and mapped trails and such big water - so beautiful. Many suggested I check out the famous Prince of Wales Hotel (Established 1927) - stunning in it’s positioning, hailing over the small town. The Visitor Centre at Waterton is so so beautiful with tribute to the living spaces, the destruction of a fire and the life that returns and the protocols and greetings from the Blackfoot Nation. Moving across so many traditional territories, I am delighting in the changing perspectives on nature and the sky and animals - consistently though honoring the land and the water….. INSPIRED once again.
I had booked two nights for this mid-May camping/hiking adventure but the high winds and snow/rain impacted sleep and sanity. Alas off to Calgary for family and friend visits, laundry, a hot shower, work catch up, and hopefully, if the weather cooperates, 150 km of TransCanada Trail over three days.
Dear Waterton Lakes National Park, I’ll be back! You are spectacular and I need more opportunities and time to explore, breath and find stillness with you.
